Updated: Apr 17, 2023

If pizza is now an essential dish in many countries of the world, the way to taste it can be different according to the continents and even, from one city to another. Moreover, we do not enjoy a pizza in the same way at home and in the restaurant.

Eating a pizza among friends

Comfortably seated on a sofa, we tend to eat without cutlery, while in restaurants we use a serrated knife, most of the time.

But then, what is the right way for eating pizza in a restaurant ?

Should cut it ? Fold it ? We'll give you a detailed answer in this article !

Eating pizza in a restaurant with cutlery: good manners or sacrilege?

The restaurant is a formal setting, a public place where it is more convenient to apply good manners. Thus, it is a good idea to use a knife and a fork to cut the pizza in order to taste it properly.

Using cutlery to cut a pizza

Very concretely, eating a pizza using cutlery also allows you to keep all the ingredients of the filling on the dough, especially when the dough is thin. This avoids ending up with the filling on one side and the dough on the other! During a romantic dinner or a professional meal, it is therefore more prudent to enjoy a pizza in the restaurant using cutlery.

However, be aware that, in some countries, no cutlery will be presented to you in the restaurant. Of course, you can request it or simply follow the tradition and enjoy your pizza with your fingers.

Eating a pizza in a restaurant without cutlery: the Neapolitan tradition or the New York fashion?

If we stick to the Neapolitan tradition, the pizza is prepared with a very thin dough on which we place the filling.

Therefore, the dough is often too fragile to be cut with a knife: in fact, the simple passage of a cutlery may cause all the ingredients of the filling to slip!

The greatest pizza specialists recommend tasting this popular dish using the folding method. All you have to do is fold the pizza in half and bite into it, starting with the tip of the triangle. In this way, we avoid the filling from escaping on both sides!

Some gastronomic traditions even require not to cut the pizza into triangles, but to fold it directly like an origami in order to bite into it! This method is particularly recommended for pizzas with mozzarella or burrata toppings.

In addition, if you prefer to cut your pizza into triangles and then fold them in half, you can also use a fork to fold up the tip and thus keep all the filling. As you will have understood, the art of tasting a pizza is a question of tradition, good manners and quite simply desire! The most important thing is to enjoy!
